[STORMREPORTS] Gordon's ghostly rains

Winchester (nw) VA

After 2 days of high clouds from what was once Gordon, heavy rain moved
into VA Monday evening, reaching us about 7am Tue.

Whenever the ground become saturated, the deepest end of backyard
becomes a wet wx stream. The water also ponded around the house.

After about 7 hours of a steady, moderate to heavy rain, the sky begins
to clear.

The storm dumped 2.02" of rain, bringing monthly rain to 3.28". A
garden rain gage, subject to ground spatter, measured 3.3".

I checked the VA NWS radars & pis's [public information statement] &
found that:

Blacksburg: radar down at 6pm Tue; Pis gave max amount of 4.59" at Apple
Orchard Mnt, in Botetourt Co (just north of Ronoake VA). 18 stations or
individuals reported at least 2" of rain.

Sterling: Max radar estimate of 4.50" (near Mnt Falls Park, and 20 miles
sw of my location). Radar estimates showed widespread 2-3" amount in the
northern Shenadoah Valley (nw VA). 1-3" estimates was common elsewhere
in the nw half of VA, & central MD, with scattered amounts that
elsewhere in the LWX cwa

Max ground report was 4.50", at Hogback Mnt (Warren Co, near I 81/66,
and 30 miles south of my location). 4 stations/ invdivuals measured at
least 2" of rain, and 15 had 1-2" amounts.

Wakefield: radar max estimate was 3.4" NE of Rocky Mount NC. 1-2" est to
have fallen along the southern Blue Ridge. Other VA totals were light.
No pis was issued.

The low treked from Danville in the south central part of VA at dawn NE
to near Washington DC in the afternoon.

Today will feature a 1 day taste of summer, w/ the high approaching 90
in much of state. A frontal system will bring more thunderstorms Thur, &
more tropical moisture from what is forecast to become Helene could move
into the area Sunday.
