A line of thunderstorms developed about 60 miles north of my location
in Temple, Texas (120 miles south of Dallas) during the afternoon and
moved south. The gust front arrived just before 4:30 p.m. with north
winds to near 30 mph, creating extensive blowing dust that dropped
visibility to less than 5 miles. Rain began around 5:00 p.m. and was
heavy for about 15 minutes before subsiding and ending by 5:30 p.m.
Total rain at my station was 0.79". This was the largest single day
total since mid June and almost doubled the amount of rain we have
received since June 29 (0.88").
Abilene received 0.37" of rain and ended their consecutive days
without rain at 72 days. The record for consecutive days with out
rain is 73 days set in 1970.
Rain got close to DFW Airport but not close enough as their
consectutive days without rain was extended to 74 days. This replaces
the previous record of 58 days in 1934.
The high temperature in Austin reached 100 degrees, replacing the
daily record high of 98 degrees set in 1982. This was the 41st day of
100 degree temperatures this year, the 3rd most.
The low temperature in Brownsville only dropped to 78 degrees and
this tied the previous high minimum record originally set in 1906.
