On Sunday afternoon 8/6/00 at 4:15 pm while on the east side of
Tampa, an F0 tornado passed through a local fleamarket that fellow Tampa
CASI member Joseph Dube and I were at, on Fowler Avenue between U.S. 301
And I-75. The funnel was approximately 75 yards wide and filled with
limbs and sand. It moved from east to west at approximately 40 mph,
creating wind gusts to approximately 70 mph.
The normal east coast seabreeze impulse collided with the west coast
seabreeze just to my east earlier, a climatologically favorable area
for the collision. Other meteorological factors involved were
atmospheric drying at around 500 mb and a tropical wave traversing the
state. There was also evidence of microburst type straight line wind
damage in the area away from the tornadoes path.
We were in a quonset hut type shelter covered with a canvas like
material approximately 100 yards long, partially open at both ends and
along the sides. The wind hit like a bomb sending debris and sand
through the structure, which was full of people. Joe and I and our wives
found ourselves holding on for dear life. I looked up and saw the canvas
cover rise and fall from one end to the other as the tornado passed down
the length of the shelter. A piece of the F0 tornado actually entered
the shelter and of course was cut off from the parent funnel, spinning
itself out while tapped inside, BIZARRE!
