Tornado Kills Eight, Injures 79 in Alberta
MONTREAL (Reuters) - A tornado obliterated a popular Canadian mobile
home campground near Red Deer, Alberta on Friday evening, killing eight
people and injuring 79 as it flipped dozens of trailers in its path,
authorities said on Saturday.
Red Deer County spokesman David Hilman said the death toll had risen to
eight, with 79 others injured. The tornado knocked a number of
campground trailers into Pine Lake and an intensive search of the lake
by divers resumed at dawn after being suspended overnight due to
darkness, authorities said.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police Cpl. Patrick Webb told reporters in nearby
Innisfail that the dead included four women, three men and a 2-year-old
child.
The storm hit the Green Acres campground, about 36 miles (60 km)
southeast of Red Deer, during a weekend baseball tournament, Hilman
said. A tornado spawned by the storm destroyed 400 trailer campsites in
the campground.
``You see trailers out there, mobile homes that have been picked dry of
all the workings of the structure itself, the structure of vehicles
being twisted,创 Webb said. ``It is unbelievable to see what Mother
Nature can actually do to what man has constructed.创
The Green Acres campground was a summer recreation area used by
vacationers, including many families with children.
In addition to the dead and injured, 325 people were evacuated to a
nearby community center and college in Red Deer, said Jim Squire, Red
Deer County public information officer.
Squire added that county officials were beginning to obtain information
on the scope and severity of injuries inflicted when the funnel cloud
touched down at about 8:30 p.m. EDT on Friday (0030 GMT on Saturday).
The twister ripped through the campground, flipping trailers, tossing
cars and uprooting trees. Although some of those injured escaped with
small cuts and bruises, others suffered broken limbs and gouges from
flying debris.
``Some of the injuries are life threatening,创 he said.
Crews continued to search the campground as rescue personnel reported
finding trailers stacked one on top of the other, Squire said.
Authorities said they did not know how many people had checked into the
campground or how many others had been headed there for the weekend.
That made it difficult to determine the number of missing, Webb said.
Site Described As ``War Zone创
Louise Martin, producer for RD-TV, said the television station's video
footage from the scene showed injured victims sitting amid the wreckage
of the campground.
``It磗 like a war zone, mobile homes and cars upside down, people
walking around covered in blood or sitting down wrapped in
blankets,创 she said.
Television pictures on the CTV network showed debris strewn by the
lakeside where many trailers had been parked. A nearby house was in
ruins and several cars and trailers were upended.
The injured were taken to hospitals in Red Deer and the nearby community
of Three Hills. At least two energy companies provided disaster relief
crews.
Rescue crews were called in from surrounding communities, including the
cities of Calgary and Edmonton. Residents of neighboring communities and
farms also rushed in to help, but some were turned back because of the
crush of vehicles and personnel.
The Canadian Red Cross set up a telephone number, 403-346-1241, to
provide information to relatives and friends of possible victims.
