Winchester (nw VA)

Hello all,

I am out of seclusion [for at least a day] to report that the north and
south ends of my county [Frederick] had severe thunderstorms. The
north's turn was about 6pm, although no warning was issued for it
locally.
Photo: convective clouds about 5pm looking NE.

In the Baltimore MD region, 2 slow moving thunderstorm produced several
hours of heavy rain in the eastern suburbs. This gas station canopy
collapse was shown on WJZ tv ch. 13. However, the tv station did not
say where it was.

The 2nd storm was about 8:45pm, and was severe over southern reaches of
the county. This bolt was about the only one i filmed... nearly all the
actual bolts were obscured by the tree line in my yard. This is looking
N, toward a weaker part of the storm.

Among the worst damage in the Washington DC area, was a house struck by
lightning. The Fairfax Co ( near western VA suburb) home suffered an
estimated $100,000 damage, but no one was hurt. Vidcap & info from WUSA
tv ch 9 in Wash. DC.

Also, the sun has been stormy the last few days, and a major pulse from
a strong flare is due to reach earth later today. Details at
http://www.spaceweather.com.

Since i am still backlogged on e-mail, my postings will remain limited.
I will continue to post noteworthy storms & weather as i feel is needed,
but near-daily posts likely won't happen soon.
