INCIDENT MANAGEMENT SITUATION REPORT
FRIDAY, JULY 14, 2000 - 0530 MDT
NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS LEVEL II
CURRENT SITUATION:
One new large fire was reported in the Northwest Area and initial attack
forces were active in the Northern Rockies and Rocky Mountain Areas.
Strong winds associated with a passing cold front could challenge control
efforts on fires east of the Cascades and into the Northern Rockies today.
The National Interagency Coordination Center processed orders for
helicopters, airtankers, a lead plane, infrared aircraft, caterers, shower
units, meteorological equipment, engines, radio equipment, crews, and
miscellaneous overhead. Very high to extreme fire danger indices were
reported in Oregon, Washington, California, Montana, Idaho, Utah, Nevada,
Arizona, Colorado, and Wyoming.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN AREA LARGE FIRES:
An Area Command Team (Mann) is managing the large fires in western
Colorado and Wyoming. A Type II Incident Management Team (Bustamante) is
staging in Denver.
MUDDY CREEK, Wind River Agency, BIA. A Type II Incident Management Team
(Anderson) is assigned. The fire is burning in grass and sagebrush ten
miles west of Thermopolis, WY. Fire activity has been low, and crews are
continuing burnout operations. Ranch homes, a watershed and winter deer
habitat are threatened.
NORTHWEST AREA LARGE FIRES:
BEATY BUTTE, Lakeview District, BLM. A Type II Incident Management Team
(Bright) is assigned. This lightning-caused fire is 60 miles northeast of
Lakeview, OR. It is burning in heavy brush in an inaccessible area.
Another day of gusty winds and low relative humidity has deterred
containment efforts. Current threats are to wildlife habitat and a
wilderness study area east of the fire.
OAK FLATS, Southeast Washington State Forestry. This fire is 10 miles
northeast of Goldendale, WA. The fire is burning in grass and brush.
Airtankers assisted in protecting two structures that were threatened.
Increased humidity yesterday aided containment efforts.
WESTERN GREAT BASIN AREA LARGE FIRES:
A Type II Incident Management Team (Suwyn) is staging in Elko, Nevada.
CHERRY, Ely Field Office, BLM. A Type II Incident Management Team
(Murphy) is assigned. The fire is burning in dense pinyon pine, juniper
and mountain mahogany 70 miles northwest of Ely, NV. Large pockets of
unburned fuel remain, while difficult terrain and severe weather
conditions continue to hamper suppression efforts. There is no threat to
structures at this time.
SOUTHERN AREA LARGE FIRES:
LONGLEAF VISTA, Kisatchie National Forest. A Type I Incident Management
Team (Melton) is assigned. The fire is 30 miles northwest of Alexandria,
LA and is burning in a wilderness area. Aerial ignition operations should
be completed today. Crews are improving fireline and mopping up.
WHITE, Sabine National Wildlife Refuge. This fire is burning in marsh
grass 30 miles southwest of Lake Charles, LA. No new information was
reported.
TWIN COMPLEX, Florida State Division of Forestry. This complex in Polk
County consists of the Difficult and Stump fires, which have burned
together in a swamp. No new information was reported.
EASTERN GREAT BASIN AREA LARGE FIRES:
A Type II Incident Management Team (Saleen) is staging in Salmon, Idaho.
CLEAR CREEK, Salmon-Challis National Forest. This lightning-caused fire
is burning in a rugged wilderness area 26 miles northwest of Salmon, ID.
The suppression strategy for this fire is to contain it using natural
barriers. Crews have been ordered to protect cabins and residences near
the fire area.
ALASKA AREA LARGE FIRES:
Alaska currently has 21 unstaffed fires in limited protection areas for
336,320 acres.
ZITZIANA, Tanana Zone, BLM. This lightning-caused fire, which started on
6/13, is 85 miles west of Fairbanks. Infrared imagery shows areas of
concentrated heat scattered along most of the fire's perimeter. Crews are
continuing native allotment protection operations.
BERING CREEK, Tanana Zone, BLM. This fire is 35 miles southwest of
Tanana. It was started by lightning on 6/14 in a limited suppression
area. East winds have contributed to increased fire activity. The
northwest corner of the fire has moved two to three miles.
BEARPAW MOUNTAIN, Tanana Zone, BLM. This fire is burning in black spruce
100 miles southwest of Fairbanks. It was started on 6/24 by lightning.
Cabin protection operations are completed and all personnel have been
demobilized from the fire. This will be the last report unless the fire
is staffed again.
OUTLOOK:
*** A RED FLAG WARNING IS POSTED IN CENTRAL AND SOUTHEAST WASHINGTON FOR
STRONG WINDS ***
*** A RED FLAG WARNING IS POSTED IN WEST CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN WYOMING FOR
LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITIES AND STRONG WINDS ***
*** A FIRE WEATHER WATCH IS POSTED IN PORTIONS OF NORTHEAST WYOMING AND
THE BLACK HILLS OF SOUTH DAKOTA FOR LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITIES AND DRY
LIGHTNING ***
Monsoon moisture will continue to circulate into portions of Utah,
Colorado and Wyoming. Low pressure off the west coast will circulate
moisture northward from California into eastern Oregon, central Idaho and
western Montana.
Colorado and Utah will have partly to mostly cloudy skies with isolated to
scattered showers and wet thunderstorms. High temperatures will range
from 65 to 80 in the mountains and in the 80's and 90's at lower
elevations and up to 105 in desert areas. Winds will be west to southwest
at 10 to 20 mph. Minimum relative humidities will be 10 to 30 percent,
except drier across the southern Utah deserts.
Idaho, Nevada, eastern Oregon, Montana and Wyoming will be partly cloudy.
Scattered thunderstorms will occur in Montana, Wyoming, northern Idaho and
northeast Oregon. High temperatures will be 65 to 85 at high elevations
and the mid 80's to around 100 in the valleys. Winds will be southwest to
northwest at 10 to 20 mph, with occasional gusts to 35 mph in Montana.
Winds near thunderstorms will also be gusty. Minimum relative humidities
will be 10 to 25 percent.
Louisiana will be partly cloudy with a slight chance of showers and
thunderstorms. High temperatures will be in the mid 90's. Winds will be
west to northwest at 5 to 15 mph. Minimum relative humidities will be 40
to 50 percent.
