NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS LEVEL II
CURRENT SITUATION:
New large fires were reported in the Western Great Basin, Eastern Great
Basin, Rocky Mountain and Northern Rockies Areas. Firefighters made good
progress on fires in the Eastern and Western Great Basin Areas. High
winds contributed to large fire growth in those Areas. Initial attack
activity was moderate throughout portions of the Great Basin, Rocky
Mountain, Northern California and Northern Rockies Areas due to recent
lightning storms. Very high to extreme fire danger indices were reported
in Oregon, Alaska, California, Montana, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Arizona,
Washington, Wyoming and Colorado.
WESTERN GREAT BASIN AREA LARGE FIRES:
KELLY CREEK, Winnemucca Field Office, BLM. A Type II Incident Management
Team (Carr) is assigned. The fire is 12 miles northeast of Golconda, NV.
Strong winds contributed to fire growth.
RAMSEY, Carson City Field Office, BLM. A Type II Incident Management Team
(Burdick) is assigned. The fire is burning near Fernley, NV in grass,
sagebrush, pinyon pine and juniper fuels. Fireline construction was
slowed by steep and rocky terrain.

of Fairbanks and is burning in black spruce and hardwoods. Crews
continued to secure the fires perimeter.
BEARPAW MOUNTAIN, Tanana Zone, BLM. The fire is burning in black spruce
100 miles southwest of Fairbanks. Fire activity increased with warmer
conditions and gusty winds. Cabin protection along the Kantishna River
continues.

OUTLOOK:
** A RED FLAG WARNING IS ISSUED IN UTAH FOR STRONG WINDS AND DRY
LIGHTNING. ***
** A RED FLAG WARNING IS ISSUED IN SOUTHEASTERN IDAHO FOR GUSTY SOUTHWEST
WINDS AND LOW FUEL MOISTURE. ***
*** A FIRE WEATHER WATCH IS POSTED IN WESTERN WYOMING FOR LOW RELATIVE
HUMIDITIES AND GUSTY WINDS. ***
An upper low pressure system will extend from western Canada to the
California coast. Weak disturbances embedded in the trough will move
across the Pacific Northwest and into the Northern Rockies today. The
best chance for moisture will be in the Northern Rockies.
Montana will be mostly cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms
producing gusty winds and small hail. High temperatures will range from
55 to 65 degrees in the mountains and near 70 degrees in the western
valleys. Minimum relative humidities will be 25 to 35 percent in the
mountains and 35 to 50 percent in the mountains. Winds will be out of the
west/southwest at 10 to 20 mph.
Northern California will be mostly sunny in the morning turning to partly
cloudy in the afternoon with isolated thunderstorms, mainly north of Mount
Lassen. High temperatures will be in the 60's in the mountains to near 90
degrees in the valleys. Minimum relative humidities will be 25 to 45
percent with southwest winds 10 to 20 mph.
The Western Great Basin will be partly cloudy and cooler in the north with
a change of thunderstorms across eastern Nevada. The remainder of the
area will be mostly sunny. High temperatures will be 55 to 65 degrees in
the mountains and 75 to 85 degrees elsewhere. Winds will be west to
northwest at 15 to 25 mph. Minimum relative humidities will range from 10
to 25 percent in the valleys and 20 to 40 percent in the higher
elevations.
The Eastern Great Basin will be mostly cloudy by the afternoon with a
chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly over the mountains. High
temperatures will range from 65 to 75 degrees over the mountains and 85 to
105 degrees in the warmer deserts. Winds are forecast to be southwest at
10 to 25 mph except in Utah where winds will be 20 to 35 mph with gusts to
50 mph. Minimum relative humidities will be 10 to 25 percent in the
deserts and 30 to 40 percent over the mountains.
