FIRES
INCIDENT MANAGEMENT SITUATION REPORT
MONDAY, JUNE 5, 2000 - 0530 MDT
NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS LEVEL III
CURRENT SITUATION:

New large fires were reported in the Southern Area. Initial attack activity
was moderate in Florida, southern California and New Mexico, and light
elsewhere. The National Interagency Coordination Center mobilized
helicopters, airtankers, a lead plane, infrared aircraft, engines,
meteorological equipment, crews, a Buying Team, and miscellaneous overhead.
Very high to extreme fire indices were reported in New Mexico, Arizona,
Utah, California, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, Kansas, and Mississippi.

A helicopter working for Florida State Division of Forestry crashed while
doing bucket work on a fire near Fort Myers, FL. The pilot did not survive.
The entire fire community extends condolences to the family and friends of
the pilot.

SOUTHWEST AREA LARGE FIRES:

An Area Command Team (Harbour) is assigned to manage the large fires in
northern Arizona. A Type II Incident Management Team (Bustamante) is
assigned to the Cibola National Forest to manage miscellaneous fires. A Type
II Incident Management Team (McElwaine) has been ordered to stage in New
Mexico.

VIVEASH, Santa Fe National Forest. A Type I Incident Management Team
(Bateman) is assigned. This fire is burning in ponderosa pine and mixed
conifer five miles northwest of Pecos, NM. Crews held the fireline and
mopped up along the perimeter of the fire. A secondary line was completed
from Elk Mountain south toward Evergreen Valley.

PUMPKIN, Kaibab National Forest. A Type II Incident Management Team
(Anderson) is assigned. The fire is 15 miles northwest of Flagstaff, AZ. The
fire made active runs and spotted up to 1/2 mile within the fireline's
perimeter. Fuel conditions remain extremely dry and the threat to the
Kendrick Lookout Tower and historic cabins remains.

CERRO GRANDE COMPLEX, Bandelier National Park. An Area Command Team (Mann)
and a Type II Incident Management Team (Carr) are assigned. Another Type II
Incident Management Team (Smith) will transition with Praytor's team today.
The fire is near Los Alamos, NM. Aerial grass seeding has now covered over
2000 acres. After 1/2 inch of rain was received on 6/2, excellent erosion
control results were noted in areas where contour raking and felling were
completed and where grade control structures were in place. Between 150 and
200 volunteers are assisting on rehabilitation projects.

SOUTHERN AREA LARGE FIRES:

BUNDY LAKE, Florida State Division of Forestry. The fire is burning in heavy
fuels 15 miles northeast of Gainesville, FL. Containment efforts are being
hampered as the fire is burning underground in a lake bed for up to 300
yards before resurfacing. Current threats are to nearby powerlines and
structures.

MORRIS BRIDGE ROAD, Florida State Division of Forestry. The fire is north of
Tampa, FL in Pasco County. No other information was reported.

CRANBERRY, Florida State Division of Forestry. This fire, which is in
Sarasota County, was reported to be contained on 5/28. The fire escaped
containment lines yesterday and consumed an additional 25 acres. Current
threats are to pastureland and timber.
WESTERN GREAT BASIN LARGE FIRES:

BUCK SPRINGS, Humbolt-Toiyabe National Forest. A Type II Incident Management
Team (Burdick) is assigned. This fire is burning in the Mt. Charleston
Wilderness, ten miles east of Pahrump, NV. Fuel types include pinyon pine,
juniper and ponderosa pine. Observed fire behavior includes uphill runs and
spotting. Timber resources, endangered species and cultural sites are
threatened.

* Anchorage Wildfire Drill
A wildfire drill is scheduled for Tuesday, June 6th at approximately 1 PM
on the Anchorage Hillside. The exercise is being conducted by the
Anchorage Fire Department with assistance from the State Division of
Forestry and other agencies. The exercise will use smoke canisters and
smoke generators which may create large amounts of smoke in the areas
around Golden View Drive and from Ricky Road to 172nd Street. The drill
is designed to test the Anchorage Fire Department's ability to respond to
a wildfire on the hillside.
