flooding across the western sections of the state with several streams and
arroyos at or above flood stage. Heavy rains are expected to continue on
Friday from eastern Minnesota into southern Michigan, and in Kansas and
Oklahoma.

FIRES
INCIDENT MANAGEMENT SITUATION REPORT
FRIDAY, JUNE 2, 2000 - 0530 MDT
NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS LEVEL III
CURRENT SITUATION:
New large fires were reported in Colorado and Florida. Minor initial
attack activity occurred in the California, Western Great Basin,
Southwest, and Southern Areas. The National Interagency Coordination
Center mobilized helicopters, a lead plane, air attack, infrared aircraft,
radio equipment, engines, meteorological equipment, and miscellaneous
overhead. Very high to extreme fire indices were reported in New Mexico,
Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Nevada, California, Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, and
Mississippi.
SOUTHWEST AREA LARGE FIRES:
An Area Command Team (Harbour) is assigned to manage the large fires in
northern Arizona.
VIVEASH, Santa Fe National Forest. A Type I Incident Management Team
(Bateman) is assigned. This fire is burning in ponderosa pine and mixed
conifer five miles northwest of Pecos, NM. The fire received 1/10 inch of
rain yesterday during the passage of afternoon thunderstorms. Crews have
begun to construct direct fireline on the east side of the fire. Pecos
Canyon has been reopened to residents.
PUMPKIN, Kaibab National Forest. A Type II Incident Management Team
(Anderson) is assigned. The fire is 25 miles northwest of Flagstaff, AZ.
The fire has been less active due to favorable weather and diminished
winds. Crews are continuing burnout operations along control lines and
roads. Mop up is progressing well.
CERRO GRANDE COMPLEX, Bandelier National Park. An Area Command Team
(Edrington) and two Type II Incident Management Teams (Praytor and Carr)
are assigned. The fire is near Los Alamos, NM. Ignition caused by
rolling material on steep slopes on the west side has caused some
containment problems. Rehabilitation work is progressing under the
direction of the Burned Area Emergency Rehabilitation team.
SOUTHERN AREA LARGE FIRES:
MICROWAVE, Florida State Division of Forestry. This fire is in Osceola
County, FL. It started on 5/5 and has grown to 1,500 acres. Crews
successfully completed a burnout operation.
SUNSET, Florida State Division of Forestry. This fire is in Osceola
County. Spotting is causing containment problems. No current threats at
this time.
RETENTION POND, Florida State Division of Forestry. The fire is burning
in swampland near Orlando, FL. Crews are running hose to flood swamp
areas. Inaccessibility of the fire area is causing containment problems.
One subdivision is still threatened.
BASS HIGHWAY, Florida State Division of Forestry. The fire is in Osceola
County, southeast of Orlando, FL. Spotting continues to be a problem in
the marsh area of the fire.
CARLTON RESERVE, Florida State Division of Forestry. The fire is ten
miles northwest of Port Charlotte, FL. Spotting is causing containment
problems.
SWILLEY COMMAND, Florida State Division of Forestry. The fire is in
Hillsborough County, east of Tampa, FL. No new information was reported.
GREEN SWAMP COMPLEX, Florida State Division of Forestry. This complex
includes all the state fires in Citrus, Sumter, Hernando, Pasco, and Lake
counties. Fires over 100 acres (with acreage in parenthesis) include:
CHAIN LINK (2,507), GREEN SWAMP GROVE (550), USDA (131), DM (700), DW
(100), CROOKED PINES (100), and SLOANS RIDGE (112). Mop up operations are
continuing on all the fires.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN AREA LARGE FIRES:
WINTER FLATS, Grand Junction District, BLM. This lightning caused fire is
16 miles north of Grand Junction, CO. The fire made a significant run
with the passing of a cold front. Continued high winds, spotting, and
frost- killed fuels are contributing to containment problems.
HALEY, Grand Mesa-Uncompahgre-Gunnison NF. The fire is 20 miles north of
Nucla, CO on the Uncompahgre National Forest. The fire is burning in
ponderosa pine, sage and oakbrush. Diminished winds and lower
temperatures have caused fire behavior to moderate. No structures are
threatened.
EASTERN GREAT BASIN LARGE FIRES:
SWEETWATER, Vernal Field Office, BLM. A Type II Incident Management Team
(Shell) is assigned. The fire is located about 50 miles southeast of
Vernal, UT. Observed fire behavior includes occasional torching, but no
significant fire growth has occurred. Dozers and crews have commenced
fireline construction.
OUTLOOK:
*** A FIRE WEATHER WATCH IS POSTED IN WEST CENTRAL FLORIDA AND THE FLORIDA
PANHANDLE FOR LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITIES ***
Florida will be partly cloudy. There is a slight chance of showers and
thunderstorms in the panhandle and the extreme southern part of the state.
Temperatures will be 85 to 95. Winds will be northeast to southeast at 5
to 15 mph. Minimum relative humidities will be between 35 and 50 percent.
Arizona, New Mexico, southern Utah, and southern Colorado will be partly
cloudy with isolated afternoon thunderstorms over the mountains of New
Mexico and in the Four Corners area. East of the continental divide,
there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms. High temperatures will
range from the 70's in the northern mountains up to the low 100's in the
deserts. Winds will be south to west at 10 to 20 mph. Minimum relative
humidities will be from 10 to 20 percent.
California will be mostly sunny except for morning clouds and fog along
the coast. Temperatures will be from the mid 60's in coastal areas up to
110 in the deserts. Winds will be less than 12 mph except along the
coast, where winds will reach 18 mph. Minimum relative humidities will be
10 percent in inland areas and up to 35 percent along the coast.

A mystery illness, possibly a bacteria, lurking in lunch and dinner buffets
made 71 guests and eight employees of Embassy Suites Denver Tech Center
sick last week. The sick people suffered nausea, vomiting and diarrhea for
about 24 hours from what health officials suspect is some kind of
food-borne illness. After several days of tests, they still don't know just
what the pathogen is.
"It's not at all unusual" to be unable to identify the specific bacterium,
Wiant said. "In about 95 percent of cases of suspected food-borne illness,
we never isolate the specific bacterium or virus that causes it."
