5/26/00
High Point, NC
As reported here earlier, a severe thunderstorm with winds between 60-85
miles an hour was experienced here yesturday. I was outside taking pictures
of buildings for work, when it came up very suddenly. Only that I tuned to AM
radio to listen for static did I know that a heavy storm was on the way. In a
matter of five minutes, the western sky went from simply cloudy (this was
9:30 am) to ominous. Light rain came first, which encouraged everyone inside.
I got in my car to head home, too little light for photos! On the way it grew
breezier, but not windy, till I rounded a corner and wham! White-out rain
conditions. For the first time in my life, I had to stop the car on account
of rain. I couldnt see road, mailboxes, trees, anything! Between gusts, I got
to a point that I was driving with the storm, and with that working with me,
I could try to get home. Increadibly gusty wind full of leaves, large
branches rolling down the street with me! I got a bit further up the road,
closer to home, and it decreased to just rain with lots of lightning. No
damage at my house, for once.
Greensboro, a few miles north of me was hit the worst. Damage occured in a
line from Kernersville, NC to the PTI airport, to Greensboro to Burlington,
very much along Interstate 40. In these areas, damage was quite comparable to
what I saw in Raleigh after Hurricane Fran. Numerous trees down, many across
roads and on to houses (Greensboro was known for its old trees!). College
campuses particularly hard hit, such as Guilford and UNC-G, and Elon. Glass
blown out of buildings downtown, power out for over half the city, some gas
lines pulled up, water lines too.
No one was killed. School is out for today as streets were too clogged for
busses. Very much a major weather event, surpassing the "blizzard" this past
winter in news coverage and power outages! For more info, go to
