INCIDENT MANAGEMENT SITUATION REPORT
MONDAY, MAY 8, 2000 - 0530 MDT
NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS LEVEL II
CURRENT SITUATION:
New large fires were reported over the weekend in the Southwest, Southern,
Eastern, and Rocky Mountain areas. Two Type I Incident Management Teams
were committed in the Southwest Area. The National Interagency
Coordination Center mobilized helicopters, infrared aircraft, caterers,
showers, radio equipment, engines and miscellaneous overhead. Very high
to extreme fire indices were reported in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah,
Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
A state contract single engine air tanker hit a guy wire and crashed on
the Cook Ranch fire in Texas on Sunday, killing the pilot. The entire
fire community extends condolences to the family and friends of the pilot.
SOUTHWEST AREA LARGE FIRES:
CERRO GRANDE, Bandelier National Monument. A Type I Incident Management
Team (Humphrey) is assigned. The fire is burning in mixed conifer six
miles southwest of Los Alamos, NM. The fire began as a prescribed burn,
but escaped prescription and was declared a wildfire on 5/5. Several
structures in the area are currently threatened but protection efforts
near the Los Alamos National Laboratory have been successful.
CREE, Lincoln National Forest. A Type I Incident Management Team (Hart)
has been ordered. The fire is burning in Gavilan Canyon near Ruidoso, NM.
Three subdivisions were evacuated and three structures were destroyed.
Winds gusting to 40 mph and very low relative humidities are hampering
containment efforts. Spotting of up to three-quarters of a mile has been
observed.
COON CREEK, Tonto National Forest. A Type I Incident Management Team
(Bateman) is assigned. The fire is 20 miles north of Globe, AZ in the
Sierra Ancha Wilderness. Crews continued line construction and a burnout
operation on the southern flank. The fire was successfully held at the
head of Pueblo Canyon with the assistance of air support.
SOUTHERN AREA LARGE FIRES:
LONG BAY, National Forests of Florida. A Type I Incident Management Team
(Melton) is assigned. This fire is burning in the Apalachicola National
Forest 40 miles southwest of Tallahassee, FL. Spotting, erratic fire
behavior, and dense fuels are causing control problems. Helicopter water
drops assisted crews in holding the line. Several roads and highways in
the area remain closed.
COOK RANCH, Texas State Forest Service. The fire is burning 36 miles
south of Ft. Stockton, TX in oak, pinyon pine, and juniper. It was
started by lightning on 5/4. Inaccessibility, heavy fuels, and high winds
are causing containment problems. Current threats are to oil wells and 12
structures in a ranch complex.
OUTLOOK:
*** A FIRE WEATHER WATCH IS POSTED FOR STRONG WINDS AND LOW HUMIDITIES IN
NEW MEXICO TODAY ***

part of the state will be a little cooler, with a slight chance of showers
or thunderstorms, but little precipitation will reach the ground. Minimum

range from the mid 60's to the low 80's in the mountains, and into the
90's in the lower elevations.
Arizona will be mostly sunny and breezy with winds of 15 to 25 mph.
Afternoon humidities will be 10 to 25 percent. High temperatures will be
in the upper 70's to the upper 80's.

temperatures will range from the 80's in the panhandle and up to 110 in
the southern part of the state.

thunderstorms in southern Florida. High temperatures will be in the 80's.
Minnesota, Wisconsin, and lower Michigan will have showers and
thunderstorms. High temperatures will range from the 60's in the north,
to the 80's in the south.
