[STORMREPORTS] Central Texas Rain Report

From: Ronnie Prcin (rprcin{at}vvm.com)
Date: Wed May 03 2000 - 21:56:06 EDT

Beneficial rains were received during the approximate 30 hour period
beginning around 1:30 a.m. Monday, May 1 through 8 a.m. Tuesday, May 2.

A line of non severe thunderstorms moved through the area around 1:30 a.m.
Monday morning with rain and thundershowers continuing until 8 a.m. Monday
morning. Rain total from this event was 1.17". Light rain began again
Monday evening accounting for another .10" by midnight, making total for
the day of 1.27". Rain and thundershowers continued through the night for a
total of .49" by 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The rains were especially beneficial because, except for the first brief
line of thunderstorms, the rains were gentle allowing for maximum
absorption. Also, with the rain occurring mostly at night, it was able to
soak in before drying by the sun.

The Central Texas area is currently in a moderate drought situation. The
recent rains have brought the total for the year to 12.70", 3.44" above
normal for the year. But the area is still making up for the 18" deficit
from last year.

Most area reservoirs continue to run 75 to 85% of conservation pool. Lake
Bridgeport is 57% of conservation pool, Lake Lewisville is 55% and Lake
Whitney is 20%.

Fire danger has been reduced by recent rains as vegetation is green but
this vegetation may only provide fuel for grass fires later in the summer.
Moisture has been adequate for planting of crops but will likely dry with
increasing daylight hours and warmer temperatures of summer.

Residents are being urged to use water wisely with many communities having
already initiated voluntary water conservation practices. A few have
instituted more stringent controls.

Rainfall for the next 2-4 weeks are expected to average near to below
normal.

Some of the drought information in this report was obtained from a Drought
Information Statement which is a test product being released on a weekly
basis by the NWS.
