Storm Report for Temple, Bell County, Texas
for Saturday, April 1, 2000

A strong thunderstorm moved through the Temple-Belton area Saturday night,
accompanied by brief heavy rain and impressive CG lightning.

A Flash Flood Watch was issued for the Central Texas area during the early
afternoon. The watch area was redefined at 5 p.m. to include an area along
and south of a Canton -Corsicana - Groesbeck - Lampasas line. Two severe
thunderstorms formed west of Bell County and moved NE with warning issued
for Coryell and McClennan Counties around 5 p.m. These storms bypassed Bell
County to the NW.

Around 7 p.m., another storm formed SW of Bell County near Burnet, about 60
miles to the SW. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for Burnet and
Williamson Counties for this storm that was moving to the NE around 40 mph.
A second smaller storm formed along the Burnet/Bell County line, just ahead
of the severe storm. These two storms merged in SW Bell County and
continued to move NE toward the Temple-Belton area.

The storm moved into the Temple area around 9:20 p.m. The storm was
accompanied by heavy rain but the most notable thing to report on this
storm was the extensive CG lightning and some minor street flooding. A ham
operator reported traffic coming to a stop on Interstate 35 near the Avenue
H entrance ramp due to high water. Several ham operators around the county
reported some pea sized hail and winds in excess 35 mph but I did not
experience any hail and the peak wind gust at my weather station on the S
side of Temple was 20 mph from the NW. The storm exited the Temple area
just before 10 p.m. Total rain from this storm was 0.37". There were no
severe warning issued for Bell County for this storm.
