Storm Report for Temple, Bell County, Texas
for Thursday, March 23, 2000
A line of thunderstorms formed in far West Texas early Wednesday afternoon
and produced numerous reports of tornadoes, large hail and flash flooding
as it moved east toward Central Texas(damage reports to follow in another
report). Although the squall line had lost most of its punch by the time it
reached our area, there was still some excitement in West Bell County.
At 7 a.m., the squall line was located about 70 miles west of the area and
had weakened considerable during the night time hours. Radar showed a
broken line moving to the east around 20 mph. There were no watches or
warnings active for Bell County as the squall line moved in.
Around 9:45 a.m., the Bell County EOC alerted the Nolanville and Southwest
Bell County VFD's (about 15 miles west and southwest respectively) that a
funnel cloud had been spotted in Killeen (20 miles west). At about the same
time, the Temple Amateur Radio Club activated its spotters. The Bell County
EOC alerted the Nolanville VFD again at 9:55 a.m. and at 10:05 a.m.,
requested all volunteers to report to their station. During this same time,
several TARC spotters reported from various locations in the county that a
wall cloud was visible but there was no rotation noted.
Just before 10:30 a.m., the squall line approached my location. By that
time, there was no wall cloud visible and the passing of the line was
uneventful. Some rather unimpressive photos of the squall line can be found

About an hour after the squall line had passed, one of the local radio
stations reported that there had been a funnel cloud in Harker Heights.
Shortly thereafter, a ham radio operator that had been at the EOC reported
that a funnel cloud had been confirmed by the Killeen and Harker Heights
Police Departments and the Bell County Sheriff's Department. There were no
reports that the funnel cloud had touched down and their were no reports of
damage.
