Good Morning Folks!

Well, it's bright and sunny today, but awful dang cold!! We got 6 inches of
snow yesterday, then the winds kicked in and started blowing it around. It
was snowing to beat the band yesterday at 5:30 am when I got up to check the
news about schools, and then promptly sent my daughter and myself back to
bed. My daughter checked the snow stick, and we had an inch and a half at
that time. It stopped snowing completely around 2:30-3:00 pm, and the winds
picked up and blew the clouds out of the area. The sunset was pretty, but
frigid. There weren't too many birds out yesterday (even after throwing
some birdseed out into the back yard), but I did see one very cold squirrel
brave the elements and come into my yard for some sunflower seeds, corn on
the cob and unshelled peanuts. After all, the critters get hungry, too, and
it's harder for them to find food when it snows. Morning low yesterday was
18°F and the high was 34°F.

My husband slogged his way through the snow to the bus stop and to the
Metrorail (subway) and went to work. I'm trying to beat a light case of
bronchitis, so I stayed INSIDE! My daughter went outside last night to look
at the lunar eclipse, and she took my camera to photograph it, as I wasn't
going out in the bitter night air. I could see it from my front door before
the glass fogged up, and it was pretty.

My morning low today was 16°F and it was 22°F when I left home to come to
work. Schools were closed yesterday so I stayed home with my daughter.
Schools this morning were on a 2-hour delay.

Traffic yesterday was light and fairly easy, so the newscasters said, which
was a switch from the debacle of Tuesday's "The Great Flurry of 2000" (ha ha
ha). We're under the gun again for Sunday, and I haven't heard how much
snow to expect yet, so we'll see. And yes, I have my milk, bread AND toilet
paper, and the only place I'll abandon my car is in my parking lot out in
front of my house!! :-)

My Mom called from Wilmington, NC, last night to make sure that we all were
in and accounted for :-) and said that they'd had a beautiful sunny day with
temps in the low 40's and nary a flake. Lucky!!

Here's the latest stats from two local Wx stations near where I live in

I read some of the emails from yesterday, and saw that some of you
experienced "Thunder Snow" yesterday in western NC. Welcome to the club!!
Although we didn't have a "Thunder Snow" here in DC yesterday, we've had
them several times in the past. The first one I remember encountering was
our snowstorm of Feb. 11, 1983--nearly scared the life out of me while I was
out shoveling!! If I recall my Weather History correctly, "Thunder Snows"
were "discovered" here in the DC area, after the Weather Services located
here in the area actually witnessed them and discovered what they really
were. They're a trip, I tell you!! Not something you expect to experience
in the middle of a snow storm!!! Gee, maybe that's why there called snow
"storms"--maybe a big snow event without the Thunder and Lightning should be
called something other than a "storm"?!?! Sorry--just musing. :-)
