Storm Report

WeatherMatrix Member Glenford Pennington took this shot of a funnel cloud in downtown New York City on May 31, 2002. He says: "This picture was taken from the corner of West Street & 14th Street in Manhattan (New York County, NY) looking north. No, this isn't Kansas."

The National Weather Service also received the following storm report that day: "0818 PM SCARSDALE NY 05/31/02 WESTCHESTER FUNNEL CLOUD SIGHTED BY POLICE". Scarsdale is a suburb of New York City, to the north. NYC Meteorologist and Weathermatrix Member Larry Cosgrove also confirms that this was, in fact, a funnel cloud with multiple reports from reputable weather observers including himself. A group of meteorologists at NWS-SEA headed up by Weathermatrix Member Michael Snyder disagrees, maintaining that the photo itself has clues that it is NOT a funnel cloud.
