Winter Storm 1/14-1/16/99
NorthEast US

A large winter storm pounded the Northeastern US dumping a mixed bag of precipitation. Some areas received heavy ice, some heavy sleet, some heavy snow, up to 17" in PA. Here at CASI HQ we had some of each, along with temperatures in the single digits. An extremely powerful High Pressure system caused barometers to skyrocket, to 30.93" in the US and 30.99" in Canada. That same system set a new record low for Maine of -55* degrees F. For more information on the Allagash, ME temperature, see this text file that was posted to the WX-TALK internet newsgroup. *Update - as of 2/17/99 This temperature was disproven due to instrument malfunction. It was only -38 degrees. For a complete explanation and analysis see the NWS Statement of error.
